The MTC Winter GMU
6th March 2027

The Mout to Coast Green Man Ultra is a 30 or 45 mile loop around the beautiful city of Bristol, following the distributed woodland of the Community Forest Path. The event is run by Ultra Running Limited and consists of four well-stocked checkpoints, chip timing, and pacers running at 9, 10, 11 and 12 hour times.
The race is run twice a year, once in the winter and again in the summer, offering two very different experiences of the course. The winter event is often muddy, providing challenging but fun conditions, and the summer event is more firm underfoot and faster to run. For added variation, the two events are also run in opposite directions.
Race start for the Winter run is 7:00 for the MTC GMU45 and 10:00 for the MTC GMU30.

The Mount to Coast Winter Green Man Ultra is definitely one of the latter!
Welcome to one of Bristol's most distinctive ultrarunning challenges — a spectacular journey around the city, following the beautiful, varied and sometimes gloriously muddy trails of the Community Forest Path.
Woodland trails, open countryside, rolling hills, winding footpaths and plenty of winter mud combine to create an adventure that will test your endurance, navigation and determination.
And when you finally cross that finish line, you'll know you've earned every single mile!
Whether you're an experienced ultrarunner or looking to take your endurance running to the next level, we've got two fantastic challenges waiting for you.
45 Miles | 72 Kilometres
The complete anti-clockwise circuit of Bristol's Community Forest Path.
Starting and finishing at Ashton Park School, the GMU45 takes you on an unforgettable journey through the countryside surrounding the city.
With approximately 3,100 feet of ascent, four supported checkpoints and a 12-hour cut-off, this is a proper winter ultramarathon.
Start: 7:00am
30 Miles | 48 Kilometres
Don't let the name fool you!
The Green Boy might be shorter than its big brother, but it still packs a punch.
Starting at Keynsham, competitors join the Community Forest Path and follow the same anti-clockwise route towards the finish at Ashton Park School.
With approximately 1,900 feet of ascent and a nine-hour cut-off, it's an excellent challenge for runners stepping up to ultra distance or anyone who loves a demanding winter trail adventure.
Start: 10:00am
We know that taking on an ultramarathon is challenging enough without worrying about everything else.
That's why the Winter Green Man Ultra offers:
The Green Man Ultra takes place twice each year, offering two very different experiences of the same spectacular route.
Winter GMU: Expect softer ground, muddy trails, unpredictable weather and a proper test of endurance.
Summer GMU: Generally firmer underfoot, with the opportunity for faster running and a completely different atmosphere.
And to make things even more interesting, the two events are run in opposite directions!
Complete both 45-mile events in the same year and you could earn one of our prestigious Double Green Man Ultra Buckles, awarded according to your combined finishing times.

Two seasons. Two challenges. One very special achievement!
The Winter Green Man Ultra isn't just about the distance.
It's about the camaraderie, the challenge, the countryside, the muddy trainers and that incredible feeling of achievement when you finally reach the finish.
Whether you're taking on the full 45 miles or the 30-mile Green Boy, one thing is certain:

Will you take on the full Green Man or tackle the Green Boy?
45 Miles | Approximately 72km
The Ultimate Winter Green Man Challenge!
The GMU45 is the complete circuit of Bristol's Community Forest Path, taking runners on an unforgettable anti-clockwise adventure around the city.
Don't be fooled by its proximity to Bristol. This is a proper countryside ultra, featuring woodland trails, farmland, open fields, hills, winding footpaths and plenty of opportunities to get your feet muddy!
With approximately 3,100 feet of ascent, this is a demanding but hugely rewarding challenge.
Worried about pacing yourself over 45 miles?
Our experienced GMU Time Lords will be out on the course, targeting finishing times of:
9 Hours | 10 Hours | 11 Hours | 12 Hours
Whether you're chasing a particular finishing time or simply looking for some encouragement and company along the way, our Time Lords can be a welcome sight when the miles start adding up.
Further details can be found under our dedicated GMU Time Lords tab.
Complete the full 45-mile challenge within the permitted time and earn your Winter Green Man Ultra finisher's medal and standard finisher T-shirt.
And for those looking for an even bigger challenge, there's always the opportunity to take on the Double Green Man Ultra!
30 Miles | Approximately 48km
A Little Shorter. Every Bit a Challenge!
The Green Boy might be the younger sibling of the GMU45, but don't underestimate it!
At 30 miles, this is still a genuine ultramarathon, taking runners through some of the most enjoyable and challenging sections of the Community Forest Path.
Starting in Keynsham, competitors join the same anti-clockwise route as the GMU45 runners, heading towards the finish at Ashton Park School.
Expect woodland trails, undulating countryside, muddy footpaths and plenty of encouragement from fellow Green Man competitors.
The Green Boy is a fantastic choice for runners taking on their first ultra, marathon runners looking to step up in distance, or experienced competitors who simply fancy a cracking 30-mile winter trail race.
Complete the Green Boy and you'll receive your GMU30 finisher's medal and standard finisher T-shirt.
And perhaps, once you've conquered the Green Boy, you'll be tempted to return and tackle the full 45-mile Green Man!
Two Seasons. Two 45-Mile Challenges. One Very Special Achievement!
For those who simply can't get enough of the Green Man Ultra, we offer the opportunity to complete the Double GMU.
To qualify, competitors must successfully complete both the Winter GMU45 and Summer GMU45 within the same calendar year.
With the two events running in opposite directions, you'll experience the Community Forest Path in two completely different ways.
Winter brings the mud, challenging conditions and unpredictable weather.
Summer offers longer days, generally firmer trails and the chance to tackle the route from the opposite direction.
Complete both events and you could earn one of our prestigious Double Green Man Ultra Buckles, awarded according to your combined finishing times.
90 Miles. Two Seasons. One Incredible Achievement!
Please see our Medals, Trophies & GMU Buckles tab for full details.
Whether it's 30 miles or 45, every competitor will experience the same welcoming atmosphere, beautiful countryside and unmistakable Green Man spirit.
There's no such thing as an easy ultra, but there is an extraordinary sense of satisfaction waiting at the finish line.
Choose your distance. Prepare for the mud. And get ready to become a Green Man!
Woodland Trails. Rolling Hills. Glorious Mud. One Unforgettable Adventure!
Think you know Bristol? Think again!
The Mount to Coast Winter Green Man Ultra takes you far beyond the busy streets and into the beautiful countryside surrounding the city.
Following the Community Forest Path, this spectacular route combines woodland trails, open fields, rolling hills, quiet country lanes and picturesque rural landscapes.
And because this is the Winter Green Man Ultra, you can expect a few extra ingredients along the way...
Mud, puddles, slippery trails and whatever else the British winter decides to throw at you!
But that's all part of the adventure.
The Community Forest Path forms a wonderful circuit around Bristol, connecting areas of countryside, woodland and green spaces that many people living in the city may never have explored.
It's a route full of variety, where every few miles brings a change of scenery.
One moment you could be winding through peaceful woodland, the next crossing open countryside, climbing a muddy hillside or following a narrow footpath between fields.
And although you're never particularly far from Bristol, there are sections where you could easily imagine yourself miles from civilisation.
It's challenging, it's beautiful, and it's unmistakably Green Man!
45 Miles | Approximately 72km | 3,100ft of Ascent
Starting and finishing at Ashton Park School, the GMU45 completes the full anti-clockwise circuit of the Community Forest Path.
With four checkpoints along the way and a 12-hour overall time limit, runners will need to combine endurance, determination and good navigation to conquer this winter challenge.
30 Miles | Approximately 48km | 1,900ft of Ascent
Starting at Keynsham, the GMU30 joins the Community Forest Path at the second checkpoint of the full course.
From here, Green Boy competitors follow the same anti-clockwise route as the GMU45 runners, finishing at Ashton Park School.
Although shorter, the Green Boy still offers a demanding and rewarding winter ultramarathon experience.
The Winter Green Man Ultra is a self-navigation event.
This is an important part of the challenge, and all competitors must be capable of following the route independently.
While sections of the Community Forest Path have waymarkers, runners should not rely on these alone. Footpaths, junctions and countryside trails can sometimes be difficult to follow, particularly in poor weather or when fatigue starts to set in.
We strongly recommend that every competitor familiarises themselves with the course before race day.
We provide downloadable GPX files for both distances, allowing runners to follow the route using a compatible GPS watch, handheld navigation device or smartphone application.
Download the correct route for your race:
The interactive route maps and GPX downloads are available on this webpage.
In addition to the GPX files, we provide written route instructions originally prepared by Ali Hubbard.
These directions offer an additional navigation resource and are particularly useful for runners who prefer to have a printed backup.
We recommend carrying both electronic navigation and a suitable backup method.
One of the things that makes the Green Man Ultra special is our team of experienced GMU Time Lords.
These knowledgeable runners aim to complete the GMU45 in approximately:
9 Hours | 10 Hours | 11 Hours | 12 Hours
They know the route extremely well and can offer valuable navigation assistance to runners who choose to follow them.
However, please remember that Time Lords are fellow competitors rather than personal guides. You must still be prepared to navigate independently should you become separated from the group.
For more information, visit our dedicated ⏱️ GMU Time Lords tab.
There's no substitute for getting out on the course before race day.
In the weeks leading up to the Winter GMU, runners often organise informal reconnaissance runs to familiarise themselves with different sections of the route.
These are a great opportunity to:
We recommend checking the Green Man Challenge Facebook Group for information about any independently organised recce runs.
The Community Forest Path passes through some wonderful natural environments, farmland and public rights of way.
We're fortunate to have access to these beautiful places, and every competitor has a responsibility to help protect them.
Please remember:
Littering anywhere on the course will result in disqualification.
Ultra Running Ltd also contributes towards the upkeep of the Community Forest Path, helping to support the route that makes this event possible.
Winter trail running can be wonderfully unpredictable.
You might experience crisp sunshine, rain, cold winds, deep mud or a combination of everything!
Ground conditions can change significantly, and sections that appear straightforward in dry weather may become challenging after prolonged rainfall.
Choose appropriate footwear, carry your mandatory kit and allow extra time for difficult terrain.
The Green Man rewards preparation, patience and determination.
Forty-five miles or thirty. Experienced ultrarunner or first-time ultra competitor.
Whatever your challenge, the Community Forest Path is waiting.
Follow the trails. Embrace the mud. Conquer the miles!

📍 what3words: ///noted.slices.dined
The final checkpoint of the full Winter Green Man route!
By now, the miles may be taking their toll, but the finish line is getting closer.
Typical refreshments include water, squash, cola, tea, coffee and soup.
Take the opportunity to refuel, regroup and prepare for that final push towards Ashton Park School.
The GMU30 Green Boy starts at Keynsham, the location of CP2 on the full GMU45 course.
Green Boy competitors therefore have two checkpoints along their race route:
Both distances share the same finish at Ashton Park School.
Please remember: The Green Man Ultra is a CUP-FREE race.
To reduce unnecessary waste and help protect the beautiful countryside through which we run, competitors must bring their own reusable drinking cup.
You'll also need to carry suitable hydration bottles or a hydration bladder for use between checkpoints.
We have GMU-branded reusable cups available to purchase through our shop.
No cup? No excuses! Make sure yours is packed before race day.
While we aim to provide a good variety of refreshments, competitors with specific dietary needs, allergies or intolerances should bring their own suitable food.
Checkpoint provisions are designed to supplement your personal race nutrition rather than replace it entirely.
Please carry sufficient food and fluids to sustain yourself between checkpoints, particularly if you expect to spend longer on the course.
A well-fuelled Green Man is a happy Green Man!
To ensure the safety of competitors and allow the event to finish within the permitted time, strict checkpoint cut-off times apply.
GMU45 – Official Checkpoint Cut-Offs
These times are strictly enforced.
Competitors arriving at a checkpoint after its official cut-off will not be permitted to continue.
Please plan your pacing carefully, allowing time for refreshments, toilet stops and the possibility of difficult winter ground conditions.
Toilet facilities are available at designated locations along the route.
Please note that competitors who have started their race are not permitted to use the indoor toilet facilities at checkpoints. Use the designated facilities provided.
We also ask everyone to help keep our checkpoints clean and welcoming.
Littering anywhere on the course or at a checkpoint will result in disqualification.
After hours of running, climbing, navigating and battling the winter elements, there's something especially satisfying about reaching the finish line.
And what better way to celebrate than with some well-earned hot food?
Hot food will be available at the finish, giving you the chance to refuel, relax and share your Green Man adventure with fellow competitors.
Our checkpoint teams are there to help you enjoy your race, but remember that successful ultrarunning also requires preparation and self-sufficiency.
Eat regularly, drink sensibly, look after one another and never underestimate the value of a friendly smile at a checkpoint.
Because sometimes the smallest things make the biggest difference over 45 miles!

Four Time Lords. Four Targets. One Incredible Journey!
Taking on 45 miles around Bristol's Community Forest Path is a fantastic challenge. But sometimes, knowing there's an experienced runner alongside you can make all the difference.
That's where our legendary GMU Time Lords come in!
Whether you're aiming for a particular finishing time, looking for some company on the trails or simply hoping to complete your first 45-mile ultramarathon, our Time Lords are there to help make your Green Man experience even more memorable.
And when the mud gets deep, the hills get steeper and the legs start asking awkward questions, a little encouragement can go a very long way!
Our experienced Time Lords will be targeting four different finishing times for the GMU45:
Target Finish: 4:00pm
For runners looking to maintain a strong, consistent pace throughout the 45-mile course.
You'll need good endurance, efficient checkpoint stops and the determination to keep moving when the going gets tough.
Target Finish: 5:00pm
A great option for runners looking for a balance between a steady pace and the opportunity to enjoy the countryside.
Still a demanding challenge, but with a little more breathing room than the nine-hour target.
Target Finish: 6:00pm
Ideal for runners who want to approach the Green Man at a more measured pace.
The focus is on maintaining steady progress, managing energy levels and keeping spirits high throughout the journey.
Target Finish: 7:00pm
Our final Time Lord is aiming to finish within the overall GMU45 cut-off.
For many competitors, simply completing 45 winter miles is the ultimate goal, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that!
This is about determination, teamwork and making every minute count.
Remember: Every Green Man finisher has conquered the same 45-mile challenge, regardless of finishing time!
Our Time Lords are experienced runners who are familiar with the Community Forest Path and the challenges of the Winter Green Man Ultra.
They can help with:
And, of course, there's always room for a little humour along the way!
Although our Time Lords are experienced and knowledgeable, they are fellow runners rather than personal guides.
Their finishing times are targets, not guarantees.
Weather, course conditions, unforeseen circumstances and the needs of the event can all affect their progress.
Competitors must therefore:
The Time Lords are there to support your adventure, not replace your own preparation and responsibility.
Whether you're chasing nine hours or hoping to beat the final cut-off, there's a Time Lord target to suit a range of running ambitions.
And you don't have to stay with the same group throughout the race.
If you're feeling strong, you may decide to push ahead. If the going gets tough, you might find yourself joining another group along the way.
The most important thing is to run sensibly, look after yourself and enjoy the experience.
Nine hours or twelve, the Green Man Ultra demands commitment, resilience and a healthy sense of adventure.
Our Time Lords help bring competitors together, creating the camaraderie that makes ultrarunning such a special sport.
Follow a Time Lord. Find Your Rhythm. Conquer the Green Man!

🏆 MOUNT TO COAST WINTER GREEN MAN ULTRA 2027
THE LEGENDS ARE ALREADY WRITTEN. WILL YOUR NAME BE NEXT?
Your Safety. Your Responsibility. Your Green Man Adventure!
The Mount to Coast Winter Green Man Ultra is a challenging off-road event, taking competitors through woodland, countryside, farmland and exposed sections of Bristol's Community Forest Path.
And because it's the Winter Green Man, there's always the possibility of rain, cold winds, slippery trails and plenty of glorious mud!
We want everyone to enjoy their adventure and reach the finish line safely. That's why all competitors must carry the required equipment, understand the race rules and be prepared for changing conditions.
Preparation is everything. Pack wisely, run responsibly and respect the Green Man!
All GMU45 and GMU30 competitors must be self-sufficient and carry the following equipment throughout their race.
Important: Mandatory kit must be carried throughout the event, not simply presented at registration.
Random kit inspections may take place during registration.
Competitors must be able to present their mandatory equipment when requested by an event official.
Anyone unable to demonstrate that they have the required kit may be refused permission to start.
We strongly recommend preparing your race pack the evening before rather than rushing around on race morning!
Winter conditions can change quickly, so we also strongly recommend carrying:

Your race number must remain visible to event officials at all times.
Checkpoints are provided to monitor competitors' progress, record their times and offer refreshments.
It is each runner's responsibility to ensure that their race number has been recorded at every required checkpoint.
Missing a checkpoint or failing to have your passage recorded may result in disqualification.
Competitors must also comply with all official checkpoint cut-off times.
GMU45 – 45 Miles

One City. Miles of Countryside. An Extraordinary Trail Running Adventure!
When you think of Bristol, you might picture the Clifton Suspension Bridge, the bustling harbourside or the city's vibrant streets.
But surrounding Bristol is something rather special...
The Community Forest Path!
A wonderful long-distance walking route that winds its way around the city, connecting beautiful woodland, rolling countryside, farmland, rivers, villages and peaceful green spaces.
And it's this remarkable trail that provides the setting for our Mount to Coast Green Man Ultra.
The Community Forest Path is a circular, approximately 45-mile route around Bristol, developed as part of the wider Forest of Avon initiative.
Created to encourage people to explore and enjoy the countryside surrounding the city, the route links an incredible variety of landscapes, habitats and communities.
Despite being so close to one of the UK's largest cities, much of the path feels wonderfully rural.
You'll encounter woodland trails, open fields, quiet lanes, winding footpaths and far-reaching views across the Bristol countryside.
It's a reminder that you don't always need to travel to remote mountains or national parks to discover a fantastic outdoor adventure.
Sometimes the adventure is right on your doorstep!
The Community Forest Path forms part of the wider story of the Forest of Avon, one of England's Community Forests.
The Forest of Avon initiative works to increase woodland cover, improve access to green spaces and help create a healthier natural environment across the Bristol and Avon area.
Its aims include:
The Community Forest Path is a wonderful example of how the countryside surrounding a major city can become a place for exploration, recreation and adventure.
The Green Man Ultra takes the Community Forest Path and transforms it into one of Bristol's most distinctive endurance challenges.
Runners can choose between:
45 miles around Bristol
A complete circuit of the Community Forest Path, taking in woodland, farmland, hills, countryside trails and a fantastic variety of scenery.
30 miles of Green Man adventure
A shorter but still demanding ultramarathon, following approximately the final 30 miles of the full Green Man route.
Both events provide an opportunity to discover parts of Bristol's surrounding countryside that many people never get to experience.
One of the things that makes the Green Man Ultra special is that we run the event twice each year.
❄️ Winter Green Man Ultra
Expect muddy trails, slippery paths, challenging ground conditions and the unpredictable nature of British winter weather.
The countryside has a rugged beauty, and the course can provide a real test of endurance and determination.
☀️ Summer Green Man Ultra
Generally firmer underfoot, greener landscapes, longer daylight hours and a completely different atmosphere.
And to make things even more interesting, the Winter and Summer events follow the circuit in opposite directions.
Same countryside. Same wonderful trail. Two very different experiences!
The countryside surrounding Bristol supports a rich variety of wildlife and natural habitats.
Depending on the season and location, visitors may encounter birds of prey, deer, foxes, butterflies and many other species.
Woodlands, hedgerows, meadows and waterways all play an important role in supporting biodiversity.
As runners and walkers, we're privileged to enjoy these landscapes.
And with that privilege comes a responsibility to protect them.
At Ultra Running Ltd, we recognise the importance of looking after the countryside that makes the Green Man Ultra possible.
We contribute towards the upkeep of the Community Forest Path and encourage all competitors to follow responsible countryside practices.
Please remember:
The Green Man Ultra is a cup-free event, helping us reduce unnecessary waste along the route.
Together, we can help ensure that the Community Forest Path remains a wonderful place for everyone to enjoy.
Although the Community Forest Path is the home of the Green Man Ultra, it's not exclusively for ultrarunners.
The route can be explored in shorter sections, making it ideal for:
Whether you're walking a few miles or running the complete circuit, there's always something new to discover.
For many competitors, the Community Forest Path becomes much more than a line on a map.
It's where friendships are formed, personal limits are tested and unforgettable memories are made.
It's where runners discover hidden reserves of determination, where muddy trails become stories worth telling and where crossing the finish line means so much more than simply completing a distance.
The Community Forest Path is the reason the Green Man Ultra exists.
And we're proud to share it with every competitor who takes on the challenge.
Whether you're preparing for your first Green Boy, aiming for a Green Man personal best or chasing one of our prestigious Double GMU Buckles, take a moment to appreciate the remarkable countryside you're running through.
Respect the Path. Enjoy the Journey. Embrace the Adventure!
