Map of Tenerife:
Location
Tenerife is one of seven islands that make up the Canarian archipelago. Together, they form the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands, which is divided into two provinces: Santa Cruz de Tenerife (covering La Palma, El Hierro, La Gomera and Tenerife) and Las Palmas (Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria). All of the islands are washed by Atlantic waters and they all have their own attractions and unique landscapes that make them fantastic tourist destinations that you won't want to miss. .
Language
The language spoken on Tenerife is Spanish, with slight variations from mainland Spanish that make it known as the Canarian dialect.
Climate
In general, the climate of Tenerife is moderate, mild and very mild in all seasons. There aren't cold weather, or suffocating heat. Average temperatures are 18 ° C in winter and 25 ° C in summer, although these are relative and general values.
Tenerife has dry periods in April, May, June, July, August, September and October. The warmest month is August with an average maximum temperature of 28°C (82°F). The coldest month is March with an average maximum temperature of 20°C (68°F).
Currency & Foreign exchange
The legal tender used in Tenerife is the euro. If you are travelling from a country outside the eurozone, you will be able to change money by showing your passport at a number of exchange offices located in tourist areas, which tend to charge comparatively lower commission rates than elsewhere.
Getting to Tenerife
Tenerife's South Airport, known as the Reina Sofía Airport, is the Island's most modern international airport and one of the busiest in Spain.
There is another airport in the north of Tenerife, known as Los Rodeos, where most flights travel to and from the other islands, as well as regular national and international flights.
Mountains
Mount Teide, the Teno and Anaga mountain ranges, the Island's rocky beaches and black sands, and its ocean floors... Tenerife's unique landscape is defined by the volcanic activity that has shaped its land for millions of years. Its many peculiarities and as-yet unresolved mysteries as to its origin and geological evolution explain the huge scientific interest that Tenerife stirs up.
Visitor’s Trend
Tourists in Tenerife amounted to 5.73 million in 2019, slightly down when compared to the previous year. In 2020, the inbound tourism on this Spanish island lowered even more due to the COVID-19 pandemic and amounted to less than 2 million tourists that year.
In normal times, an average of 3.5 million people visit the Teide National Park, drawn by its scenery, or by an interest in science, astronomy or volcanology.
Culture and Traditions
It is impossible to fully understand Tenerife without getting to know about its customs and traditions, its writers and musicians, the flair and feeling of its people, its architecture and its great variety of artistic offerings; all of these are important ways to discover the essence of the Island. Nestled in its unique landscapes and embraced by its people, visitors can enjoy a wide variety of museums, cultural centres, exhibitions, architectural pieces of great renown and no end of activities, drawing them deep into the Tenerife way of life.
Topography
Half a million years ago, Tenerife's inherent vulcanism began to create volcanic cones: Pico Viejo and Teide were formed in the crater on Las Cañadas, and new emission centres emerged around the Island covering the land around them and pushing back the sea. It was at this time that Tenerife acquired its current geography and appearance.
Ecological Diversity
Although Tenerife is just a small island covering 2,034 km2 (785 sq miles), it is home to a surprising ecological diversity thanks to its special environmental conditions: the Island's abrupt topography affects its local weather conditions, leading to a great variety of microclimates. Such an abundance of microclimates results in many different natural habitats, and this is clear to see in the Island's vegetation. The flora here is rich and varied, with some 1,400 higher plant species, a considerable number of which are endemic to the Canary Islands (200) and others to Tenerife (140). In terms of fauna, Tenerife is estimated to have roughly 400 species of fish, 56 types of birds, 5 different reptiles, 2 species of amphibians, 13 land mammals and several thousand kinds of invertebrates, as well as some species of sea turtles and cetaceans..

In 2014 URL was instrumental in providing the first test-run of an explosive new race - The 0-4-0. (please see our gallery of photos).
With great excitment we are working on creating an annual 0-4-0 event and are in close discussion with the necessary authorities on the island. In the meantime, you can experience the challenge anytime of the year, courtesy of Marnix and his Team of guides.
The 0-4-0 Challenge
Some interesting statistics for 0-4-0:
0-4-0 Location Overview:
The Teide National Park is the most visited National Park in Europe, with nearly four million tourists each year coming to witness one of the greatest geological spectacles on our planet.
Tens of thousands of intrepid visitors reach the peak of Mount Teide. Most do so using the cable car which commences at a car-park located at 2365 metres near Canadas del Teide.
However, the most daring try to complete the ascent and descent of the volcano in one assault, starting at zero metres from the beach at Playa del Socorro (Los Realejos), up to the peak of Mount Teide – the White Mountain and back down to the beach at Playa del Socorro.
0-4-0 starts from a beach in Los Realejos, follows a fully marked route to the top of Mount Teide. If you are interested in the race, why not check it out and get some advanced knowledge of what to expect.
We were instrumental with an intial 0-4-0 promotional event in 2015. For these event photos please see the album in the 'Tenerife Experiences Galleries'.
0-4-0 Equipment Recommendations:

I'm vegan. Is Tenerife vegan friendly?
Tenerife is not only attracting tourism to see its incredible landscape and wildlife, but it's also nurturing a very up and coming vegan scene.
In addition, Marnix has been a practising vegan for may years now, even developing an extensive selection of his own vegan menu's.
There are many options for eating out too, with good selections of Indian, European, Mediterranean, Itlaian, Thai etc.
An interesting vegan stat:
The total percentage of vegans in the world—and all linked categories (including vegetarians), is close to 14% of the world population - and growing.
Bring along the family:
You may be looking for an individual training week, or part of a group of like minded people all looking to experience the trails and challenges that Tenerife's terrain and climate has to offer.
But there's no need to leave the family at home!
Whilst you are out pushing your fitness levels, they could be enjoying the hotel accommodation, lounging by the pool, or some therapy shopping - there's certainly plenty to do. They may even go on their own little adventure!
Simply get lost on a day out, here's some suggestions:
Siam Water Park is an absolute must, although from Puerto de la Cruz it's a ninety minute bus journey (but oh so worth it). At the end of the day you will want to go back.
El Lago Martiánez - if you are stopping at our H10 hotel it's right infront of you! It doesn't have the slides that Siam has, but it has several swimming pools with floating islands, thundering waterfalls and perfect for relaxation.
Mount Tiede - Well, you can't really miss it! An amazing location surrounded by the volcanic Tiede National Park, with a cable car to get you quite close to the peak.
Rent a Bike - Make it as leisurely or demanding as you choose. You can even take the option of an electric bike. There are many hire companies across the island.
The sea - Go boat fishing, scuba-diving, para gliding.
Horse Riding - A relaxing way to go a little off track from the hussle and bussle of the towns.
In short, there's something for everone on Tenerife.
If you would like us to source alternative accommodation for your family such as private villas with a pool, please message us.
