MTC BALOR
17th May 2027

Monday 17th May 2027 | 47 Miles
Some legends are frightening.
Others are downright terrifying.
And then there’s Balor, the fearsome giant of Irish mythology whose deadly eye could bring destruction to anyone unfortunate enough to face its gaze!
Welcome to the Mount to Coast Balor, Day 11 of our extraordinary 14-day MizMal® adventure across Ireland.
On Monday 17th May 2027, competitors will tackle another formidable 47-mile ultramarathon, continuing their remarkable journey north towards the ultimate finish line at Malin Head.
And with ten consecutive days of ultra running already behind our full MizMal® competitors, this is certainly no time to blink!
According to Irish mythology, Balor was a powerful king of the Fomorians, a race of supernatural beings associated with ancient Ireland.
His most terrifying feature was his enormous, destructive eye.
When opened, it was said to unleash devastation upon those standing before him.
Fortunately, our runners won’t have to face Balor himself.
But they will have to face 47 miles of Irish countryside, tired legs, accumulated fatigue and the relentless demands of another ultramarathon.
For standalone competitors, the MTC Balor offers an opportunity to experience a challenging single-day ultra inspired by one of Ireland’s most extraordinary legends.
For those undertaking the complete MizMal® adventure, this is their eleventh consecutive day of ultra running.
By the morning of Day 11, our full MizMal® competitors will already have completed ten demanding ultramarathons.
The excitement of the opening days may seem a distant memory.
The legs will be tired.
The body will be demanding rest.
But the finish line at Malin Head is drawing ever closer.
Successfully completing the Balor will mean eleven consecutive ultramarathons conquered, with just three more days remaining.
An extraordinary achievement by any measure!
Every successful MTC Balor finisher will earn a bespoke medal inspired by this fearsome character from Irish mythology.
For full MizMal® competitors, it will become the eleventh medal in their remarkable collection of fourteen individually themed daily awards.
Complete the entire journey from Mizen Head to Malin Head and there’s also the exclusive overall MizMal® finisher’s medal waiting at the end.
FOURTEEN DAYS. FOURTEEN LEGENDS. FIFTEEN MEDALS.
Balor may have possessed the most terrifying eye in Irish mythology, but our competitors have something equally formidable.
Determination.
Resilience.
And the courage to keep moving when every muscle is begging them to stop.
Whether you’re joining us for one unforgettable day or tackling the complete fourteen-day challenge, the Mount to Coast Balor promises another extraordinary chapter in the MizMal® adventure.
47 MILES. ONE FEARSOME GIANT. ONE UNFORGETTABLE IRISH ULTRA.

Deep within the ancient legends of Ireland lurks one of the most fearsome characters in Celtic mythology.
Balor of the Evil Eye!
A mighty king of the Fomorians, Balor was a terrifying giant whose extraordinary power made him one of the most dreaded figures in Irish folklore.
His most frightening feature?
An enormous eye capable of bringing destruction to anything caught in its gaze!
And on Day 11 of Mount to Coast MizMal® 2027, this legendary giant lends his name to another formidable 47-mile ultramarathon.
According to Irish mythology, Balor possessed a supernatural eye with devastating powers.
Some versions of the legend describe an eyelid so enormous that several men were required to lift it.
When opened, its deadly gaze could overwhelm entire armies.
Imagine standing on a battlefield, knowing that a single glance from your enemy could bring about your destruction!
No wonder Balor was feared throughout the land.
Fortunately, our MizMal® competitors won't need to worry about supernatural eye contact.
They'll have quite enough to contend with over 47 miles!
Despite his immense power, Balor lived in fear of a prophecy.
He had been warned that he would one day be killed by his own grandson.
Determined to prevent this fate, Balor imprisoned his daughter, Ethniu, in a tower, hoping to ensure she would never have children.
But as so often happens in mythology, destiny had other plans!
Ethniu eventually gave birth to a son who would become one of the greatest heroes in Irish legend.
His name was Lugh.
The confrontation between Balor and Lugh is one of the most famous episodes in Irish mythology.
During the great Battle of Mag Tuired, the Fomorians fought against the Tuatha Dé Danann, the supernatural people associated with many of Ireland's ancient legends.
As Balor prepared to unleash the devastating power of his evil eye, Lugh struck.
In a celebrated version of the tale, Lugh used a sling-stone to drive Balor's eye back through his head, turning its destructive power upon Balor's own forces.
The mighty giant was defeated.
And the prophecy had finally been fulfilled!
Balor's name remains closely associated with the rugged landscapes and ancient traditions of north-west Ireland.
In particular, folklore links him with Tory Island, off the coast of County Donegal, where stories of the Fomorians and their fearsome king have endured for generations.
It's a fitting connection for MizMal®, as our competitors continue their remarkable journey north towards Malin Head.
Every day brings them closer to the landscapes where some of Ireland's most extraordinary legends are remembered.
On Monday 17th May 2027, the Mount to Coast Balor challenges competitors to tackle another demanding 47-mile ultramarathon.
For those undertaking the complete fourteen-day MizMal® adventure, this will be their eleventh consecutive day of ultra running.
Ten ultramarathons already completed.
Hundreds of miles behind them.
And just four daily challenges remaining, including Balor.
By now, the accumulated fatigue may make even the smallest hill seem like a giant!
But our competitors have already demonstrated something remarkable.
The determination to keep going.
The courage to face another challenge.
And the resilience to overcome whatever lies ahead.
Every successful MTC Balor finisher will earn a bespoke medal celebrating this extraordinary character from Irish mythology.
For full MizMal® competitors, completing Day 11 means earning their eleventh daily medal, with just three more ultramarathons standing between them and the finish at Malin Head.
And for standalone competitors, the Balor offers the opportunity to conquer a challenging Irish ultra and become part of our unique Myths & Legends of Ireland series.
Balor may have possessed the power to destroy an army with a single glance.
But our competitors have something that no mythical giant can take away.
Their determination to reach the finish line!
47 MILES. ONE TERRIFYING GIANT. ONE LEGENDARY CHALLENGE.

Monday 17th May 2027 | Day 11 of Mount to Coast MizMal®
Balor of the Evil Eye was one of the most feared giants in Irish mythology.
But on Day 11 of MizMal®, our competitors face another formidable opponent.
The clock!
With 47 miles separating the start at Murphy's Hotel, Tobercurry, from the finish at Rolling Wave Guesthouse, Bundoran, competitors must maintain a minimum overall average speed of 4 mph.
And remember, that includes all time spent at checkpoints!
The MTC Balor has a maximum completion time of 11 hours and 45 minutes.
This is calculated using the full 47-mile distance at the required minimum average speed of 4 mph.
Checkpoint stops, food breaks and any other delays must be included within this time.
| Location | Cumulative Distance | Latest Elapsed Time |
|---|---|---|
| 🟢 Start – Murphy's Hotel | 0.0 miles | 00:00 |
| 💚 CP1 – Carrowneden | 8.8 miles | 02:12 |
| 💚 CP2 – Lugnamackan | 17.8 miles | 04:27 |
| 💚 CP3 – Shannon Eighter | 26.9 miles | 06:43:30 |
| 💚 CP4 – Gortnaleck | 36.1 miles | 09:01:30 |
| 🏁 Finish – Bundoran | 47.0 miles | 11:45 |
Important: All times are measured from each competitor's official start time. These are the calculated maximum elapsed times at 4 mph; final checkpoint operating times will be confirmed in the race instructions.
Competitors must reach each checkpoint within the permitted time.
Those falling behind the required minimum pace may be withdrawn from the event.
Remember, the 4 mph requirement is an overall average, not simply your running speed between checkpoints.
For example, spending 15 minutes at a checkpoint means you'll need to make up that time while moving.
A sensible pacing strategy, efficient checkpoint stops and good nutrition will all help you stay ahead of the clock.
For standalone competitors, completing 47 miles within 11 hours and 45 minutes is a significant achievement.
For our full MizMal® competitors, the challenge is even greater.
By Day 11, they'll already have ten consecutive ultramarathons in their legs.
Fatigue will have accumulated.
Every hill may feel steeper.
And every minute spent standing still becomes more precious.
But successfully reaching Bundoran means something extraordinary.
ELEVEN CONSECUTIVE ULTRAMARATHONS COMPLETED – JUST THREE MORE TO GO!
There's no hiding from the giant.
And there's no escaping the cut-off times!
Plan your race, manage your effort and keep moving towards that finish line.
47 MILES. 4 MPH MINIMUM. 11 HOURS 45 MINUTES MAXIMUM.

Monday 17th May 2027 | Day 11 of Mount to Coast MizMal®
Taking on the mighty Balor is no small undertaking!
With 47 miles from Tobercurry to Bundoran, competitors will need to manage their energy levels, hydration and nutrition carefully throughout the day.
And for our full MizMal® competitors, this is Day 11 of fourteen consecutive ultramarathons.
By now, keeping the engine running is more important than ever!
The MTC Balor features four checkpoints positioned along the route:
Our checkpoint teams will be there to offer refreshments, encouragement and a welcome opportunity to refuel before the next stage.
Competitors can expect a selection of typical ultramarathon checkpoint refreshments, which may include:
The exact selection may vary between checkpoints, and competitors with specific dietary requirements should carry any specialist nutrition they need.
All competitors should start with sufficient fluids to reach the first checkpoint and carry enough drinking capacity for the distances between checkpoints.
Water will be available at supported checkpoints for refilling bottles and hydration packs.
Please remember that this is a cup-free event.
Competitors must carry their own reusable drinking bottles, cups or hydration systems.
Although checkpoint refreshments will be provided, competitors should not rely entirely on them for their nutritional needs.
Every runner has different requirements, particularly during an event as demanding as MizMal®.
We strongly recommend carrying your own preferred energy gels, bars, snacks or other race nutrition.
And remember — what works on a training run doesn't always work after ten consecutive days of ultramarathons!
The MTC Balor operates a minimum overall average speed requirement of 4 mph, including checkpoint stops.
With a maximum race time of 11 hours and 45 minutes, competitors should plan their breaks carefully.
Our checkpoints are there to help you keep moving, but spending too long enjoying the refreshments could leave you chasing the cut-off times!
Eat, drink, replenish your supplies and get back on the road.
For those undertaking the complete fourteen-day MizMal® challenge, hotel accommodation and catering arrangements form part of the overall event package.
The daily checkpoint support is an additional part of the race experience, helping competitors maintain their energy throughout each ultramarathon.
Balor's evil eye may have been capable of devastating entire armies, but poor nutrition can be equally destructive to an ultrarunner's ambitions!
Keep eating.
Keep drinking.
Keep moving.
And keep that finish line in Bundoran firmly in your sights.
47 MILES. FOUR CHECKPOINTS. ONE VERY HUNGRY GIANT!
