Pendine Sands Races 2017

The Half Marathon & 10k is ALL on the beach
Pendine Races – Sunday 16th April 2017

Race start time will be advised approx 4 weeks before the race after confirmation of high tide.

The Pendine Sands Half Marathon and 10k – all on the beach.

You can find the Ultra Marathon details towards the bottom of the page.

Half Marathon details:

Enter this unique half marathon event which is a single lap, out and back along the Pendine Sands. Starting from Barnacles Cafe, down the beach past Ginst point, then looping back to Pendine for the race finish.

10k details:

An out and back along the beach, turning at the first drinks station.

You may think that running on the sand will be extremely difficult, but at Pendine the sands are home to the land speed record attempts made famous by the Blue Bird car. This means that generally the sand underfoot is quite firm and absolutely perfect for running on, especially for barefoot running.

Raise money for our official race charity:
Our official race charity is Kids Run Free – you can enter for just £10.00 which covers our Admin if you commit to raising £100 for Kids Run Free.

PARTICIPANTS FOR THE HALF MARATHON & 10k

CAN WALKERS PARTICIPATE?

Absolutely! The Pendine Half Marathon is for athletes of all speeds and sizes. Please note: Due to tidal times and the need to clear the beach of all equipment, ALL participants MUST complete the half marathon within the 4 hour course time limit. To finish within the course time limit  you must maintain a pace of at least 18:00 minutes per mile (or faster).

ARE THERE ANY AGE REQUIREMENTS TO PARTICIPATE?
You must be 16 years old prior to race day to participate in the half marathon.

HOW CAN I VOLUNTEER?
Volunteers are vital to the success of the event, please note your interest via email.

CAN I CHANGE MY MIND ABOUT WHICH DISTANCE TO RUN?
Switching events is not allowed.

WHAT IF I REGISTER AND THEN BECOME INJURED OR AM UNABLE TO ATTEND THE RACE?
Race registrations are non-refundable. You can only transfer or defer your entry up to four weeks before the event. There are NO exceptions after this date.

THE RACE & COURSE

WHERE ARE THE AID STATIONS AND WHAT IS BEING SERVED?
Half Marathon Course Water Stations:

There will be a water station at the start, one at 3.0 miles (the turning point for the 10k), another at 5.9 miles (the turning point at the end of the beach), and on returning the same midpoint station at 8.9 miles and finally one at the finish. (Note – when competitors arrive back at the starting location, the distance covered will be short of the correct Half Marathon distance, so they will be required to complete a further three short out and backs to make up the Half Marathon distance.

Competitors will receive a free commemorative drinks bottle to use at the water stations. This is to eliminate the issue of beach littering with plastic cups blowing away. These commemorative bottles can be kept by competitors as souveniers.

WHERE DO I PARK FOR THE EVENT?
Parking is limited to some controlled areas on the beach and at existing carparks generally in Pendine. We strongly encourage you to carshare as carparking may be at a premium.

The Pendine Ultra Marathon commences with a six mile stretch of flat sand, (the Pendine Sands), followed by a loop back towards the start location along lanes with some off road running, the total loop being approximately sixteen miles. (The Ultra runners will complete two loops). The Pendine Half Marathon & 10k is just on the sands of Pendine. For competitors own safety and fairness the following rules must be adhered to. Failure to comply with these rules may result in disqualification from this and future events.

The Event

The Pendine Races are organised by Ultra Running Limited.

All Ultra Marathon entrants must be 20 years of age. Half Marathon entrants must be 18 years of age and 10k runners 16 years of age. Ultra competitors must ensure that they carry with them all of their individual requirements needed to complete the race.

Every entrant must confirm that they have read these rules and other event information and therefore understand the nature of the event and that participation is at their own risk.

Race Entries

Competitors must register on-line prior to the event day for all races.

On the day registrations for collection of race numbers for both races will be open at t.b.a (dependant on tide tables) at the start location near Barnacles Cafe and will close at t.b.a. All race competitors will start their race at t.b.a.

Each participant will be given a race number which must be clearly attached by safety pins, to the front chest.

Additional Ultra Marathon Requirements:

Ultra Marathon competitors must carry the following mandatory items:

  • Backpack or equivalent
  • Ordnance Survey Map of the route (our downloadable maps are fine)

The Pendine Ultra will benefit from three CP stations.

Ultra Marathon competitors must go through all check points and it is their sole responsibility to ensure that the check point attendant has recorded their race number; failure to do so at any check point will mean the competitor has failed to complete the race and will be disqualified.

Any competitor found to not follow the pre-determined race route will be disqualified.

Competitor Retirement

If any ultra competitor has to retire for whatever reason they must contact the race organisers immediately, either by advising a checkpoint attendant or by telephoning the emergency number which will be written on the race numbers of each competitor.

The organisers want to give every competitor the opportunity of completing the race and will, where reasonable practicable, allow generous opening times of CP Stations; the allowance should be within the ability of a walker at 3.5 miles per hour
